The Hare and the Hound started out as a small rabbitry with 3 rabbits, 2 of which were my son's pets. Now, we have EXPLODED!!
Fall 09 we added 2 english angora's to our program. Mrs. Foo Foo and Boo Boo.Wow, I just love them! They love to be held unlike any other rabbit. Lots of brushing their wool but they definitley have a place in my heart. We just lost Boo Boo a few weeks ago. It is so upsetting! He was PART of our family.
We also added a trio of netherland dwarfs. Thumpkin, Pumpkin and Patch. They are the smallest rabbits we have. They are the easiest to take care of because they don't mat like the ones with long fur. We hope to breed them this spring or summer when they get old enough.
In making a decision on picking out your 1st rabbit, you should consider the characterisitics of each type your interested in. First and foremost, temperment is #1 in my book. If you can't hold them, then they aren't such a great pet. #2 is the time you have to spend with your pet. If you don't have alot of time to be brushing them then I would suggest to pick out one that does not require brushing. #3 is the size I guess. Do you have a small cage to keep it in, inside or outside or do you have more room?
Daily feeding and watering and cage duties are the same for all rabbits.
I have found through our many years of owning rabbits, the larger the breed the calmer the rabbit. The bigger ones, like Angora's, English Lops and French Lops act more like a pet dog. Although, the bigger the rabbit, the more it COST to feed. And ofcourse a larger cage.
Lionheads are what we mostly sell due to their size and temperment. They are a newer breed and everyone wants one because of the way the look . They are a little bigger than Netherland Dwarfs but not as gittery.
All rabbits require love and handling daily to keep them socializing like a pet. If you don't take the time to hold , you will just end up with a WILD rabbit as a pet. As far as our Lionheads, we have added more does and bucks to our breeding program over the past year from our own stock . We haven't ventured out to obtain outsiders. It's always best to work with what you have to produce the best qualities in rabbits. I must say, our bunnies get more beautiful every year. It's so exciting to see what we Our does and bucks produce each time we breed.
We went to our very 1st show in Dec (08) and had a blast. No, we did not come home with anything this time. But there's always the next. We are looking forward to showing some of our bunnies in the very near future. As of March 2010 we still haven't shown any of our rabbits. Just too busy. Most rabbits can be shown in rabbit shows as long as you have a pedigree for your rabbit and meet the requirements for your pet. All of our rabbits are pedigreed except for Clementine, our french lop doe and Pretzel, a PETSTORE purchase, (1/2 holland lop, 1/2 unknown).
The latest news is I have just become the 4H Rabbit Leader for greenville county. I am really excited about this opportunity to teach rabbitry to our youngsters @ teens. Email me if your interested in joining our local 4H club. So, now it's time for you to hop around and have some fun!!!!
